Kirtan opens the heart and stills the mind. It is the yoga practice of ecstatic chanting. Through repeating the Divine Names in Sanskrit, the mind is cleared of worry, doubt, fear and all limiting concepts. The joy of peace and infinite love is given to the practitioner, and transmitted through the world by chanting. This is the practice of bhakti yoga or the yoga of devotion. - contributed by Pat Sandford

“Music that is saturated with soul force is the real universal music, understandable by all hearts.” — Paramahansa Yogananda

“Kirtan is for all people. There are no experts, no beginners. The practice itself is the teacher, guiding us to ourselves. Kirtan allows us to enter into a mystery world—a world where all the logic of our minds, all the condition and learning are left outside. And in this mystery, we create a temple inside of our hearts, a place of refuge, a place of love, a place of just being.” —Jai Uttal

"Chanting is a way of getting in touch with yourself. It's an opening of the heart and letting go of the mind and thoughts. It deepens the channel of grace, and it's a way of being present in the moment." -- Krishna Das

"You start doing chanting as technique. You start to sing ‘Shri Ram, Jai Ram, Jai Jai Ram.’ You start thinking it means, Honorable Ram, Hail Ram, Hail Hail Ram. Then after an hour you stop thinking about all of that and you are just singing it. You are realizing the aesthetic of the music and how beautiful it is. Then after a while it starts to go deeper until your heart is just singing, it’s singing from inside you. Then there’s a point where true bhakti starts- where dualism ends and you become like the chant. You are in a space where it’s not emotional anymore. It’s moved into the deeper, intuitive quality of love. Touching that love leaves you with trust in the method and trust in where the method takes you—trust in the Beloved and trust in how you get there." –Ram Dass

"If we know anything about a path at all, it's only because of the Great ones that have gone before us. Out of their love and kindness, they have left some footprints for us to follow. So, in the same way that they wish for us, we wish that all beings everywhere, including ourselves, be safe, be happy, have good health, and enough to eat. And may we all live at ease of heart with whatever comes to us in life."
- Kirtan closing prayer by Krishna Das

Fourth Annual Yoga Meltdown

Sunday July 17th 2011 12noon - 6pm

As Toronto's largest, free outdoor spiritual yoga festival, Yoga Meltdown has quickly made a name for itself amongst the GTA's multitude of yoga enthusiasts. The Fourth Annual Yoga Meltdown — held as a part of the 39th Annual Festival of India (July 16-17, 2011) — will take place on July 17th, 2011, under the sun and amidst the verdant greenery of Centre Island. With free outdoor yoga classes, yoga-inspired arts and performances, vegan cooking demonstrations, a free vegetarian feast, and much more, the Fourth Annual Yoga Meltdown will celebrate yoga in a dynamic and uniquely holistic way!

Get off your Asanas and Onto the Island!

As a main feature of the Fourth Annual Yoga Meltdown, instructors from major yoga studios all across the GTA will be holding free outdoor yoga classes on Centre Island's scenic lakeside grounds. Imagine entering savasana under the warmth of the sun as the sounds of the gently lulling waves of Lake Ontario flow through the skies. Yoga Meltdown offers all guests a free opportunity to participate in professionally-facilitated yoga classes in a picturesque setting unlike any other in Toronto.

Kirtan Yoga

Kirtan yoga is revolutionizing the way the world currently thinks of yoga! With roots in ancient yogic traditions, kirtan is actually a form of aural or musical yoga that grants all participants, even those with little to no musical background, a chance to bring the exhilarating and rejuvenating sounds of kirtan yoga to life! The Fourth Annual Yoga Meltdown will have non-stop, soul-stirring kirtan performances by kirtan groups renowned throughout Toronto and across the globe. Stretching beyond just physical asanas, kirtan yoga at Yoga Meltdown will allow all guests to see, feel, and hear yoga in a brand new light.

The Yoga of Food

As more than just a routine of physical exercises, yoga is increasingly being seen as an overall lifestyle choice, providing tested and prescribed methods for happy, healthy, and holistic living. In keeping with such ideas, the Fourth Annual Yoga Meltdown will be host to free live vegan cooking demonstrations and seminars that will promote the benefits of meatless, vegan diets and foods. Moreover, there will also be a free vegetarian feast served to all who attend as part of the Festival of India!

Explore India’s Spiritual Grandeur

As a part of the 39th Annual Festival of India, Yoga Meltdown is actually the latter half of a full weekend of festivities celebrating the spiritual wonder and grandeur of ancient India. The Festival of India begins with a vibrant parade down Yonge Street on Saturday, July 16th and the celebrations then shift to Toronto's beautiful Centre Island for the remainder of the weekend. On the Island, festival-goers will find a massive, colourful and free festival, featuring a South Asian bazaar, Vedic exhibits, an Arts & Culture Showcase, a children's area, and our world-famous FREE vegetarian feast!
